Problems with your Private Registration transfer?
There can be delays in the process of transferring and registering private vehicle registrations – known by the DVLA and the Automotive Industry as a “Cherished Transfer”
Understanding the ‘Waiting Period’ You will find there is a period, of up to 9 days after the DVLA have processed your application when your vehicle will be invisible to third party companies’, this is whilst the third party systems update their data. During this time – which cannot be shortened – you may experience difficulties, for example starting a new car insurance policy or changing the policy details.
If you’ve encountered a problem with your vehicle not being registered correctly we’d suggest you allow this period before taking any action and follow the advice below. Auto Data Guru do not provide Cherished Transfer Data to the motor insurance sector but we’d suggest that you contact the main providers CDL and Experian who are the main providers of this data to insurers.
Understanding DVLA Cherished Transfer Process
There are three different scenarios:
Cherished Transfer on your Present Vehicle
If you’ve applied to make a Cherished Transfer on your vehicle, you can check the status by entering your Registration Number in the DVLA website. When the Cherished Transfer has taken place, in the DVLA Database you can contact your Insurance Company and inform them of the Cherished Transfer and ask them to amend your policy accordingly. At this point you can make the Registration Plate change. If the Insurance Company tell you that their systems are still showing the previous Registration Number, ask them to check the DVLA website them to (click here). Please keep a copy of your Cherished Transfer Documentation as this may be required by your insurance company or if you’re stopped by the police.
Cherished Transfer to a Pre-Owned Vehicle
If you have applied to make a Cherished Transfer from your present vehicle to another pre-owned vehicle, you can also check the status of your Cherished Transfer by entering your Registration Number in the Government site. Again, once the Cherished Transfer has taken place in the DVLA Database, you can contact your Insurance Company and ask them to amend your policy to show the Cherished Transfer. At this point you can make the Registration Plate change. If your Insurer tells you that their systems are still showing the previous Registration Number, ask them to check the DVLA website. Please keep a copy of your Cherished Transfer Documentation as this maybe required by your insurance company or if your stopped by the police.
Cherished Transfer to a New Vehicle
The dealership you are purchasing your new vehicle from will be able to do this for you and should have the Cherished Registration Plate on your new vehicle when you collect it. Ask the dealership for information. The reason for the delay in processing your Cherished Transfer is the time between the DVLA actioning the Transfer – which is immediate on their database and visible on their own Website, however third party companies licenced to use the data within internal systems, may take up to 9 days to utilise the amended data due to the delivery and cleansing process performed by one of the six DVLA Bulk Data Providers.
